Ethan Cowburn

Silence

bury it
lose it
hate it
wires batteries cases and stares
Teasing, taunting
“idiot speak”
nod and smile
laugh at the right time
all the while
take a guess
yes? no?
they gaze in puzzlement
damn... wrong guess
“He only pretends not to hear”
“What! What did you say?”
It doesn’t matter
just block everything out
silence is better.

Isolation
Frustration
Noise infestation
Whistling headaches
ringing
Ringing
RINGING!
MAKE IT STOP!
Make it stop,
please just make it stop.
give me back silence
give me solitude
silence.

silence is better

Ethan Cowburn is a 15 year old from Liverpool, NY. He grew up with a severe hearing loss in his right ear which has not made his life easy, but he is still alive and healthy so he’s not complaining. Luckily, throughout his life, poetry has always been there for him when he needed to get things off his chest and really just express himself in ways he would have never imagined. He is still young and has a lot to learn about poetry, but if it wasn't for poetry he wouldn't be anywhere near where he is today, and for that he is forever thankful.
